While February was slightly extended yesterday thanks to Leap Day, the number of movies I watched overall was just below the number of days there were in the shortest month of the year. That’s not to say that I didn’t watch a lot, but I just watched a dozen new-to-me movies, and most of them are Oscar nominees this awards season. So while I enjoy this time of year and celebrating the Academy Awards, I’m about ready to go back to a more varied movie intake of watching older movies alongside newer releases. Still, it was a thrilling month with a lot of Q&A screenings, including Oppenheimer with Robert Downey Jr., Nyad with Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, The Holdovers with Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Maestro and A Star Is Born with Bradley Cooper, Poor Things and The Favourite with Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos, and Barbie with America Ferrera. In between all of that, I went to a star-studded live reading of Anatomy of a Fall, which featured appearances by filmmaker Justine Triet and star Sandra Hüller, along with Palm Dog winner Messi (who portrayed Snoop in the movie)! The biggest highlight of the month outside the awards season screenings was the nitrate film festival at the Egyptian Theatre, and I was very lucky to see the four classic movies that played in the series: Rebecca, Bicycle Thieves, Winchester ’73, and Spellbound. After the Oscars, there’s plenty more for me to look forward to over the next few weeks, with Noir City Hollywood toward the end of March, and then the TCM Classic Film Festival just a couple of weeks after that!
