March was a pretty stacked month compared to February, which as I mentioned last month, was mostly focused on awards season viewings. With the Academy Awards now in the rearview, I got back into the swing of things with a more varied selection of movies, though I caught a few screenings of the newly-minted Oscar winners at the Academy Museum, which included Best Picture winner Oppenheimer in 70mm. On the other end of the spectrum awards-wise, I had an absolute blast seeing Showgirls in 35mm at the Academy Museum, where the film and star Elizabeth Berkley received much-deserved recognition; it’s among the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had watching a movie in a theater. The other star-studded screenings I went to in March were both at the Egyptian Theatre: Love Lies Bleeding with director Rose Glass and stars Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian and the L.A. Premiere of Immaculate with director Michael Mohan and star-producer Sydney Sweeney. But the best films I saw at the Egyptian this past month were part of the Noir City film festival, which concluded with a bang this past weekend with a Nightmare Alley screened on nitrate and the West Coast Premiere of the new 4K restoration of Le samouraï. As I went to most of those screenings, it felt like a good warm-up for the TCM Classic Film Festival, which is finally coming up in just a few short weeks! But until then, here’s everything I watched over the past 31 days.
