Films in 2024: April

As usual, April was a very exciting month, mostly thanks to the annual TCM Classic Film Festival! There’s a lot to report there, so I’ll save my recap of this year’s festival for a separate post, but overall it was another amazing time in Hollywood. Outside of TCMFF, there were several other notable screenings that I attended around town. At the beginning of the month, the Egyptian Theatre screened a handful of movies starring Kim Novak, as she was the subject of the first episode of the podcast “You Must Remember This”, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in April. I only went to the last screening in the series, Picnic, as it was followed by a conversation with YMRT host Karina Longworth and Patton Oswalt (who voiced Boris Karloff for the podcast). Also at the Egyptian was a fun 25th anniversary screening of 10 Things I Hate About You, which featured a Q&A with some of the cast and the film’s screenwriters, and just last weekend I caught the 70mm screening of the new restoration of The Searchers, which had just screened there during TCMFF the week before. Elsewhere, I saw a few movies starring Marlon Brando in honor of his centennial: a double feature of On the Waterfront and The Wild One at the New Beverly, and A Streetcar Named Desire at the Academy Museum, which was preceded by a panel of people who knew or had a connection to the actor. Other screenings at the Academy Museum included another entertaining weekend with John Waters, in which he gave live commentary during two of his early short films and introduced his infamous film Pink Flamingos, and a truly glorious screening of my all-time favorite movie, Singin’ in the Rain, which Gene Kelly’s widow, Patricia Ward Kelly, introduced to a packed audience. And finally, just yesterday on the last day of the month, I attended the L.A. premiere screening of The Fall Guy at the Dolby Theatre, which of course included some thrilling stunts alongside remarks from star Ryan Gosling. Though I’ll say my favorite new release of 2024 so far goes to Challengers, which I had the pleasure of seeing this past month as well. So until I post about my experience at TCMFF to fully cap off this past month of movie-watching, here’s an overview of everything I saw in theaters and at home.
