Films in 2024: January

January was a particularly exceptional month of screenings, to say the least, which included seeing Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in person, twice! I was seated far away from both of them the first time around, for a special screening of Killers of the Flower Moon where they, along with Martin Scorsese and other notable cast members, took part in a Q&A after the film. Exactly one week later, I had the privilege of seeing DiCaprio in conversation about his career before a screening of The Wolf of Wall Street. Then a few days later, I got to attend the first live recording of one of my favorite podcasts, Vanity Fair’s Little Gold Men, which featured an interview with Gladstone. Other great screenings I was lucky to go to included Heat with Michael Mann, Poor Things and The Kids Are All Right with Mark Ruffalo, and Household Saints and Dogfight with Nancy Savoca. Another fun film-related event was with TCM host Dave Karger at the Academy Museum, celebrating his new book, 50 Oscar Nights. And my first month of the year wasn’t just about movies, as one last screening I want to mention is Masters of the Air, where the first three episodes were shown, followed by a Q&A featuring some of the cast; I even got a picture with one of the stars, Callum Turner! While I definitely took several trips to the theater, I also spent a good amount of time at home watching Moonlighting, which I started in the new year and I’m already through the first two seasons. Anyway, February is already looking to be a busy month with more exciting screenings as awards season ramps up, but until then, here’s a quick overview of the movies I watched over the past month.
