Films in 2024: November

November seemed to go by in a flash, with a lot of exciting screenings around town filling up another month of movie-watching. I got to see several of my very favorite movies for the first time on the big screen, including The Lady Eve, Dodsworth, and The Clock on 35mm, as well as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The More the Merrier, the latter of which featured a wonderful introduction by George Stevens Jr. and Annette Bening. I also finally got around to watching Greed for a special 100th anniversary screening at the Egyptian on 35mm with a live score. And I got to see Sophia Loren in person ahead of a screening of her Oscar-winning performance in Two Women as a part of a retrospective series celebrating the actress’s 90th birthday at the Academy Museum. Other screenings with special guests I attended this month were for new releases, including A Real Pain with Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin, and Jennifer Grey, Inside Out 2 with Kelsey Mann, Amy Poehler, Tony Hale, and June Squibb, Queer with Daniel Craig, and Spellbound with Alan Menken. Between all the great theater experiences, I also spent much of the month watching noir films at home for the annual Noirvember. Before going through everything I watched in November, I should also mention that I made my yearly appearance on The Matinee podcast, where host Ryan McNeil and I talked about Sean Baker’s new film Anora, along with other movie-related topics as usual. So be sure to take a listen here, or wherever you get your podcasts.
