Films in 2026: June

June was filled with more re-watches than movies I hadn’t seen before, but there was plenty I enjoyed, both new and old. The month began with the American Cinematheque’s annual Bleak Week programming, wherein I saw The Piano Teacher and Heaven’s Gate with Isabelle Huppert, A.I. Artificial Intelligence with Haley Joel Osment, and Midsommar and Hereditary with Ari Aster. The AC also started its annual 70mm festival, which continues through the first week of August; so far, I’ve seen Inherent Vice, Batman, and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, the latter of which I always enjoy watching every summer in a theater. I also caught some new releases, which included special Q&A screenings of Leviticus with director/writer Adrian Chiarella and stars Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen, moderated by Obsession star Michael Johnston; Maddie’s Secret with John Early; and The Invite with Olivia Wilde and Penélope Cruz, moderated by Pedro Pascal! But the biggest star of the month for me was Marilyn Monroe, with June 1st marking her 100th birthday. I revisited ten of her films, both at home on TCM and on the big screen at the Academy Museum. It’s been especially wonderful to see her movies in a theater, and there are a couple more I’ll be catching at the Academy Museum later this week as they conclude their Monroe series, all to coincide with their new exhibit on the Hollywood icon. Also, I must mention that living legend Mel Brooks just celebrated his centennial a few days ago, so I’ll have to re-watch some of my favorites of his soon. But in the meantime, here’s a look back at the past 30 days…
