It felt like I spent much of July inside a movie theater; in fact, I saw more than 30 films on the big screen over the course of the month! A good chunk of that was due to some cool 70mm screenings, mostly from the American Cinematheque’s annual Ultra Cinematheque 70 Fest, which included a wide variety of movies from 2001: A Space Odyssey and PlayTime to Flatliners and Howard the Duck. The other 70mm screenings I caught outside of that programming were The Abyss and Streets of Fire at the Academy Museum, and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood at the Vista. Another fun bit of programming that I saw a lot of this month was the Academy Museum’s “Summer of Camp!” series, most notably two triple features: one dedicated to Joan Crawford, and another of all the Austin Powers movies. The other noteworthy screenings I want to mention that were big highlights for me were Two for the Road (one of my all-time favorites that I was very happy to finally see on the big screen), Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (the full saga all in one film as Quentin Tarantino intended), and Jaws with a live orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl! All in all, it’s been a very fun month at the movies, and with that said, here’s a full overview of everything I watched in July…
