I ended up revisiting a lot more movies than watching ones I hadn’t seen before in June, but most of what I re-watched was seeing great films on the big screen for the first time. That included Ben-Hur and Cleopatra at the Academy Museum as part of their Oscar Sundays screenings (I also saw The Ten Commandments, though I’d seen that in a theater before); and The Lady Vanishes, Foreign Correspondent, Suspicion, and I Confess at the Egyptian for a Hitchcock series that continues through the summer. I also attended several Q&As for movies new and old, including The Life of Chuck with filmmaker Mike Flanagan and stars Tom Hiddleston and Chiwetel Ejiofor; Sorry, Baby with filmmaker and star Eva Victor; Clueless with filmmaker Amy Heckerling and stars Alicia Silverstone, Breckin Meyer, and Elisa Donovan; and The Virgin Suicides with filmmaker Sofia Coppola and star Kirsten Dunst! The first week of June also marks Bleak Week at the American Cinematheque, and I got to see Missing with filmmaker Costa-Gavras and Miller’s Crossing with star Gabriel Byrne. But the biggest cinematic highlight of the month, in conjunction with the AC and Bleak Week, was visiting the Criterion Mobile Closet! It was a long day that flew by thanks to great conversations in line with fellow cinephiles as well as the Criterion staff. So this past month was quite busy, and summer is just getting started! There are always more movies to look forward to, but until then, here’s what I watched over the past 30 days…
