July was a big month for movie-watching in theaters, as the American Cinematheque held its annual 70mm film series, which expanded to the Egyptian this year! I got to watch several movies there and at the Aero, mostly seeing old favorites along with some discoveries: Inception, a double feature of Top Gun and Days of Thunder, the new 70mm restoration of North by Northwest, The Doors, Far and Away, the new 70mm print of Vertigo, Kenneth Branagh’s unabridged Hamlet, and Streets of Fire. Another notable repertory program that started in July and continues into August is the Academy Museum’s Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger series, which kicked off with a glorious screening of Black Naricuss in 35mm nitrate with Thelma Schoonmaker. So far I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and I Know Where I’m Going!, the latter of which screened in 35mm. And tonight I’ll be seeing my personal favorite from The Archers, A Matter of Life and Death, in 4K. But before moving on to the new month, one more screening I want to mention was that I got to go to the L.A. premiere of Twisters and see director Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos before the movie. Anyway, I’m excited to see what August has in store between all the repertory screenings and Summer Under the Stars on TCM, and who knows what else!
