September was a jam-packed month, between catching up with some movies that TCM programmed for Summer Under the Stars, watching new releases (including seeing Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another, screened in beautiful VistaVision), and attending Beyond Fest screenings (which is still going on for a few more days!). Among my favorite Beyond Fest screenings and guests so far have been If I Had Legs I’d Kick You with filmmaker Mary Bronstein, and stars Rose Byrne, Conan O’Brien, Danielle Macdonald, and A$AP Rocky; 70mm screenings of Big Trouble in Little China with John Carpenter and cinematographer Dean Cundey, and The Testament of Ann Lee with filmmaker Mona Fastvold; and a tribute to William Petersen with showings of To Live and Die in L.A. and Manhunter (and he watched both of them with the audience before each Q&A). Other cool screenings outside of that included Night of the Juggler with James Brolin, and the first episode of The Savant and Miss Sloane with Jessica Chastain, whom I’ll say must be the nicest celebrity I’ve encountered, as she stayed after the Q&A to take pictures with everyone who wanted one (including me!). But my favorite theatrical experience of the month was seeing all 18 episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return at the Egyptian over the course of a weekend. It was incredible to be so immersed in the world David Lynch helped create, and even more special hearing from several people who worked on this series with him and beyond. This will be a hard month to top, but October may be even more stacked for me! So stay tuned for what I end up watching this upcoming month.
