July was a great month at the movies, with the most-anticipated movie event of the year “Barbenheimer” in the middle of the month. I didn’t see Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day, but I did watch the movies within 24 hours of each other on back-to-back days, so I basically still got in on the fun at movie theaters on opening weekend. Aside from those films (both of which I loved), I saw some other great movies on the big screen, including new favorite Rollercoaster, and all-time favorites In a Lonely Place and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. And there was also American Cinematheque’s month-long 70mm festival, where I attended glorious screenings of Spartacus and Apocalypse Now, both of which I hadn’t seen in more than a decade, so I was grateful to revisit them in the way they deserve to be seen. Coming up real soon at the AC is Noir City Hollywood (technically in Santa Monica this year), so I’m excited to dive into all things film noir, and of course much more in August. But before then, a look back at everything I watched last month…
