This past month as far as movie-watching goes was a good way to kick off 2023. As usual, I watched some awards contenders, which included catching up with the remaining movies that just earned Oscar nominations in the acting categories (and elsewhere) that I hadn’t seen yet. There are at least a couple of other nominated movies I want to check out before the Academy Awards in March, along with some other past films featuring this year’s nominees. Speaking of, in the first weekend of January I got to revisit the three films Todd Field directed at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, which included the filmmaker himself at the screenings. I also had the pleasure of seeing Paul Thomas Anderson interview Richard Linklater for his latest movie Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood; a Q&A with Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and an introduction by Rian Johnson for a 35mm screening of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Another big theatrical highlight of the month was American Cinematheque’s “The Great Rock Hudson” series, and I was able to see four of his movies in 35mm (three of which were directed by Douglas Sirk). And at the Academy Museum, I saw a practically full screening of Reds, and got to enjoy Bringing Up Baby with an audience and an introduction by Cary Grant’s daughter, Jennifer. Now with all that said, here’s a breakdown of everything I watched in January.
