This post is basically a statistical overview of my movie year. Since 2012 I’ve managed to watch more than the equivalent of one new-to-me movie per day (in 2014 I watched 402), but this year I fell a little short. Though it was great watching more than 365 movies per year for the past 3 years, I don’t think I’ll be able to watch quite as many in the years to come. Still, I’d say the final number of films I watched in 2015 is still massively impressive, and it really was quite a year for me in movie-watching.
New-to-Me: 340
Re-Watched: 122
Total: 462
New-to-Me Films by Decade:
- 1920s – 4
- 1930s – 39
- 1940s – 89
- 1950s – 71
- 1960s – 37
- 1970s – 26
- 1980s – 16
- 1990s – 16
- 2000s – 13
- 2010s – 29
The 1940s is usually the decade I watch the most films from for each month, so I’m not surprised that it ended up being my most-watched decade of the year. Plus, I re-watched 36 films from that decade, totaling 125 overall! And with the 1950s coming in second (with 21 re-watches and totaling 92 overall), I think a lot of it had to do with all the noir films I watched in June, July, and November thanks to TCM’s Summer of Darkness and of course Noirvember.
As far as individual years go, I saw the most new-to-me films from 1950 with 16, followed by 1947 with 15. I also had 4 re-watches from both those years. Looking at the films I watched and revisited from those years, a lot of it was because of all the noir I watched (along with a few old animated Disney movies)!

There are plenty of movies that were released this past year that I really wanted to see but didn’t get a chance to, so I’ll be playing some catch-up in the next couple of months.
2016 Blind Spots
Last year I successfully took part in Ryan’s Blind Spots challenge, and I enjoyed doing it so much that I’m happy to say I’m doing it again for 2016 (you can read more about it at The Matinee here)! So just like last year, I’ll try to watch one of the 12 movies I’ve chosen for the challenge per month. On the 28th of each month (as I did last year), I’ll make a post about my thoughts on the movie. I thought about focusing on one era or country this year, but I decided to pick a dozen various movies as I did before, all of which I’ve been wanting to watch for personal interest or because of their huge acclaim. What’s also exciting this year is that one of my picks will actually be presented in theaters by TCM and Fathom Events, so if all goes well I’ll actually see one of my blind spots on the big screen! Anyway, here’s what I’ve chosen:
Pandora’s Box (1929)
Rome, Open City (1945)
Ikiru (1952)
The Wages of Fear (1953)
The Ten Commandments (1956)
The Producers (1967)
McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)
A Woman Under the Influence (1974)
Scarface (1983)
The Green Mile (1999)
In the Mood for Love (2000)
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
In addition to the Blind Spots, I’m also taking part in the 52 Films By Women challenge, where I’ll try to watch one film directed by a woman per week. I was only able to watch a few films from TCM’s Trailblazing Women program back in October, but I loved discovering great women-directed films, and there’s plenty for me to see. It’s sure to be an exciting year in movies, and I hope 2016 gives you all a fantastic year in film discoveries!
Nice variety of picks. I’ve seen all but two.
I LOVE The Ten Commandments in all its overblown De Millieian splendor. Wonderful set pieces and Heston is perfect as Moses. All the others have some wonderful elements, even Requiem which I hated has an amazing performance by Ellen Burstyn, but of them all aside from Commandments I’m interested to hear your take on Wages of Fear, that’s a brilliantly executed film.
I’ve been meaning to watch The Ten Commandments for a few years now and never got around to it, so I thought it’d be perfect for a Blind Spot, I’m really excited to finally see it!
Requiem for a Dream is actually the one movie on my list that I was hesitant about adding, as I’ve heard how disturbing it is, but I’m most curious to see Ellen Burstyn’s performance.
I’ve seen just one of your Blind Spot movies, and that was ‘The Green Mile’, which is definitely worth a watch. And good lord…462 movies watched last year? At some point this year I’m going to go for a film a day for a month, but 462 is well beyond my grasp! Although…two days into the new year, and I’ve watched two movies!
When I was looking into The Green Mile I noticed it the director of it also made The Shawshank Redemption, which I love, so I’m looking forward to seeing it!
Seeing as 2016 is a leap year, the extra day might give you more time to watch more movies! Maybe you can try the film-a-day goal for February, though you’re off to a good start for this month already. 🙂
I’m impressed with the amount of films you saw! Last year I watched 198 new to me films and rewatched 67 for a total of 265. The year before was 302 I think. I’ve thought of doing some kind of post like this but never felt like typing up all the titles haha
Thanks! 200+ films is still a great accomplishment, a lot of people I know don’t even get past 100 in a year haha.
And for wrap-up posts like these, I usually have a draft post and add titles as I go just so I don’t have to do it all in one sitting.
